homeschool--history D34

Week D34
Topic: World War II ends in 1945

Look in the history section of the JE section of the library, also this is a good one for biographies, like on world leaders and generals.

There are some good images on youtube, be sure to screen first (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdPE_DpDBP4)

Reunion and Soccer Camp

Crazy Hair Day!

Last week was one of those fun weeks you are glad to be done with. Every morning was British Soccer Camp, with a real British college-aged coach (his accent kept the kids' attention better than anything), and then every afternoon we went up to the lake where my family was staying for reunion. Often didn't get home until midnight or later.

Good Weekend

We had a nice day yesterday. Hubby and I went on a three hour motorcycle ride up the hill on logging roads and trails (he thinks we have to go as fast as possible no matter the terrain, so I slow him down, but we had fun), then we went to the river with my bro.

homeschool--The Olympics are coming!

Friday is the opening ceremonies for the 2008 Olympics. This is a great chance for some fun geography learning.

This page lists all the countries involved in the olympics:
http://www.nbcolympics.com/countries/index.html

One way to watch and learn (this is how my boys watch monster truck competitions) is to have each child pick a participant in each competition you watch that they will root for (they cannot pick the same person), have them find the country on a map and look it up on the site above. Learn about the countries that win medals (http://www.nbcolympics.com/medals/index.html), especially the underdogs.

How many kids will fit in my living room?

Monday night we had a few families get together for FHE,
twenty-one kids.

Camp Half-blood

The kids and I have really enjoyed the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series books by Rick Riordian, so for fun we had our own camp half-blood this week(http://www.rickriordan.com/index.php/books-for-children/enter-camp-half-blood/). The kids picked the name of their cabin from the book, (the little boys fittingly picked Hermes--in the book it was always the messiest), loser of cabin inspection had to clean up the mess hall, then after chores and studies we played Capture the Flag. This version is perfect for this camp: http://www.eblong.com/zarf/capture-flag-rules.html
